Electronic Flasher

Installing an electronic flasher

Installing an electronic flasher is the first step towards conversion to LED running lights on a Pinzgauer. It’s also a cure for the problems aged original flashers tend to exhibit. Here is how to do it:

Obtain an elecronic flasher rated at 24 volts DC. A Buss BE234 can be special-ordered through any Buss dealer. Most auto parts stores that sell the yellow-packaged BUSS automotive fuses can get one for you. They run about $15 US.
Alternative models: Signal Stat / Trucklite model 263-4 (Jay Reich), Grote 44860 (Cory Long)

The typical electronic flasher will have three terminals with the ISO markings of P, L and X.

Because of the various MIL Specs required by different countries that operate Pinzgauers, the wiring colors are very hard to follow. However, nearly all the trucks have the same (or very similar) Hella mechanical flasher relay. Because of this, you can easily rewire the new electronic flasher using the following connector code table. Just match up the codes on the bottom of the Hella flasher to the codes on the electronic flasher.

Here is the new flasher mounted on the truck. The old unit's mounting bolt also held two ground wires. Be sure to remount these wires with one of the original mounting bolts!

Seal up any extra line connectors with electrical tape and secure them under the dash keeping the connectors from making electrical contact with anything.
