Some tips and tricks we either stumbled accross or which were submitted by our members or readers. If you have a tip or trick to add please email it to mail@sdp-pinzgauer.org !! # These chains in the oily and dirty bags just close to your passengers trousers? Take an empty gallon jug of antifreeze, clean it and cut the top off around the spout. It's an easy way to keep the interior of your Pinz clean. The handle makes it easy to carry. Oil the chains or they will rust! The best stuff is Corrosion Block.... # Regreasing fittings? Clean off the old grease and crud from the zerk. This will keep dirt from being forced into the bearing. # Changing oil with a hot engine (recommended) and worried that you spill all the hot oil over you or loose the plug into the hot oil? Drill a hole into a piece of strap iron, weld a 1” piece cut from a 10mm hex key into the hole and bolt it into a metal funnel with a wire mesh underneath. Loosen the plug with a hex key, then spin it off the rest of the way with the funnel. The oil will drain into your container below with no mess, no loss of plug and no hot oil burns for you. # Have to break a bead on a tire where you can’t call roadside assistance? Use your Hi-Lift jack! Place the tire flat on the ground and put the Hi-Lift on your bumper with the base on the tire close to the rim. As you work the jack, the weight of the vehicle will pop the bead so you can complete the repair. # Surprised that 25+ year old bolts come out without problems? Re-insert them back with graphite grease or even better Lanacote (marine supply) and it will be that way in another 25 years. # Want to get the plastic door knobs off to replace the worn out door panels? Spray them with WD-40 from the rear, put an adjustable wrench behind them and tap them off with a hammer (btw, the knobs on the 4WD and lock levers are the same). # Need a new distributor? The distributor housing is identical to the Unimog 404 (with much cheaper distributors!). You only have to buy the special shaft/advance for the Pinz to make it fit and you will end up much cheaper..... # Want to replace a tail light bulb and have no clue how to get the lens off? Well, it’s only held by the two screws but the gasket acts like glue. If you have the fan holding tool: it fits exactly into the screw holes and you can use it to work the lens loose. If not, put 2 Philips screw drivers into the holes and use a lever. # There’s silicone and there’s silicone. Avoid the common or garden stuff, buy Napa "The Right Stuff". It comes in a cheese whiz can and works great. # For face joints on Pinzers use “jv64b" a shellac based solution, just like the original stuff used by Steyr. Available again from Uncle Napa. # The Pinz has lug-centric wheels which have to be torqued correctly while the vehicle is still off of the ground so they center properly. The weight of the vehicle can push the wheel off-center slightly while you're tightening them down if left on the ground. The Pinz manual recommends engaging 4-wheel drive and both of the lockers before changing a wheel. This not only makes the vehicle more stable and less likely to roll, but also so the wheels can be torqued while off the ground. Recommended torque: 100 ft-lbs or 135 Nm. |
