Models: ALL, Years: ALL There are many newcomers who have never driven a Pinz asking whether a more powerful engine or a Diesel engine can be installed in the Pinz. Please read the following and try to understand: My wife has a Rolex® Oyster wristwatch which usually works fine. Unfortunately it will stop running if she doesn't wear it for a few days which is painful as she has to set time and date again. I think it is a good idea to replace the Rolex® movement with a more durable Seiko quartz movement. All I have to do is to take the existing mechanical movement out and replace it with the modern quartz movement. I'm sure a lot of Rolex® owners have done this before as it’s an obvious improvement! Can those who have done so please email me some details to make it easier for me to do the modification? Got it?
If still in doubt here a more technical explanation: The Pinzgauer air-cooled 4-cylinder engine is a pretty unique design adapted to the requirements of an offroad vehicle. It has a lot of low end torque, exactly what you need for offroading. Even modern Diesels the size which would fit into the existing area (still with the problem where to fit the radiator!) usually provide LESS low end torque. A very, VERY small amount of Pinz owners have installed small Diesel engines (mainly VW) plus transmission and transfer cases from other vehicles but it's not a modification the average mechanic will be able to do and the resulting performance isn't a huge improvement. You just have a different power plant almost as thirsty as the original one. Just compare it to a modern 4x4 pickup truck with an empty weight of 2t and the 13-15mpg won’t look bad any more. Even the newer Pinzgauer TD with it’s Diesel engine doesn’t get more then 15-17 miles out of a gallon and if you figure in the higher cost for Diesel........
