Models: ALL, Years: ALL Does your gear shifter squeak, or is it hard to shift gears? The problem might be the lubrication point that Steyr forgot to mention. Tools Required:
The shifter has some spring loading, so the cover will push away from the body as you loosen the bolts. It's best to loosen all the bolts equally before removing them.
Now lift the inner cover up and you will see the ball and socket of the shifter pivot. Mine was totally devoid of any lubrication. Smear a liberal coating of chassis grease on the surfaces of the ball and socket. You can now put everything back together. Since the shifter has some spring loading, it may be a little difficult to get the bolts started. I found that I could use a Phillips screwdriver to line up one set of holes to get a bolt started. Get all four bolts started, then gradually tighten them a few turns at a time so that the cover draws down equally. Wipe off any excess grease and you're done. My shifter is smooth as silk after this quick fix. Contributed by Jay Reich |
