Tail Light Conversion

Models: all Swiss Army, Years: all

The original Swiss Army tail lights are a bit weird to say the least. Red tail is fine but amber turn and brake signal isn’t real standard.

You have two options to change this:
- buy the inserts for dual filament bulbs from one of the Pinzgauer parts suppliers
- install different 3 or 4 chamber tail lights (similar to the ones used on the later 716/718 models)

Step

Dual filament inserts

New tail lights

1

Remove the tail light lenses and wires

2

Install new dual filament inserts

Install new tail lights

3

Wire the sockets,
- grey (tail light) to the bottom left post
- black-white (left) black-green (right) (turn signal) to the top post
- brown (ground) to the ground post
- the so far unused orange (brake) to the bottom right
- insulate the pink wire for the blackout light

Wire the socket,
- grey (tail light) to the tail light socket
- black-white (left) black-green (right) (turn signal) to the turn lights
- brown (ground) to the ground post
- the so far unused orange (brake) to the brake light
- insulate the pink wire for the blackout light

Close the tail lights, the work in the rear is done.....

Step

Option 1, tail lights as they should be but the trailer plug doesn’t work any more (no brake signal).

Option 2, the trailer plug works but the amber turn lights also work together with the brake lights.

5

Search for the orange (looks more like brown) wire going from the brake switch to the emergency flasher. Remove the 2 orange wires from the emergency flasher but keep them connected. Insulate the connection of the two orange wires.                                       Done!

You’re done!

Caution! Some Pinz’s were partially rewired and especially the ground wires can have different colors. The orange wire which “passes” the emergency flasher can also be hooked up somewhere else (i.e. they both go to the brake switch). Make sure that it’s disconnected from the emergency flasher and still connected between the brake switch and the tail lights if you chose option 1. Before you drive around make sure the tail lights work as they are supposed to!

An option for those who want correct tail lights and use the trailer socket: make a connection from the orange brake light wire to an unused pin in the trailer socket. Connect the pink blackout light wire to another unused pin in the trailer socket. In the trailer plug connect those two pins with a short piece of wire. Remove the pink wire from the light switch (S58) and extend/connect it to the emergency flasher (54). If you plug in the trailer the Pinz tail lights work as in option 2 but the trailer lights are correct. If you disconnect the trailer the Pinz lights work as they should.... Would generate problems with a regular European trailer but ......
